Mt. Vesuvious and Pompeii, 15 Minutes too late

08/13/2005, 19:14 PM

I know that is has been a few days since i have last wrote in here. That is because i have been busying my days with things to tell you about.

Lets see. Sunday night was the last time i wrote.

Monday. Class. Nothing big happened. I went out with friends that evening and had a great time.

Tuesday.
Class as usual. That night however was the Festival of Saint Francesco. In Piazza Novembre at 930pm, there was classical music with gorgeous laser light show. WOW. We tried to get pictures but the camera didn't want to take them very well. If you could have seen it with the music going in the background....WOW!

Wednesday.
No class. Only because we were tired. We met my friend Ruth for lunch at the cafeteria and chatted away. That night, i went out with my friends again.

Thursday.
Class. Nothing exciting. Stayed in that night and read a book.

Friday.
This was the day we decided to go south for the day and see what we could see. As usual, we got lost on the way there. Not to worry though. We made it to the coast and walked along the beach. It was a bit cloudy but still wonderful. The water was a bit chilled and the sand, not to nice to walk on considering it was mostly rocks, but just being down there was so nice. If the south were a bit safer, i wouldn't mind living there.

After walking thru the surf, we decided to see if we could go to the top of mount Vesuvius. Yes, this is the popular volcano the blew and then covered and killed the town of Pompeii. While driving to the mountain, it was hard to see the top of it. By this time it was starting to get a bit hazy. It had been raining on and off all day long.

The drive, again was along a bunch of curvy and winding roads. I griped my belt for dear life. We arrived near the top, where you could go in a walk up to the mouth of the volcano for 8 euros. YEAH! As much as i am fearful of being on a volcano, i wanted to see the top. So we paid the 2.50 to park, walk up to the ticket booth to find out......It closed 15 minutes before we got there. So we ended up paying 2.50 to park and not being able to actually see the top. They obviously just wanted our money. It was nice however to stare off down the mountain....into fog.

On the way down however we were able to stop at a viewing area and see parts of the lava and mudslide area left alone from tourists. A few pics on the AOL page that i will link at the bottom.

Next we decided to go to Pompeii. I have wanted to see this since i first got to Italy. I was hoping that we could have gotten here a while back, but hey, we were going now.

When we got there, the area was full of people. Mind you, Pompeii isn't just a archeological site, it is still a living city. We walk thru the crowds and get to the entrance. I can see bits and pieces of the building. My stomach is alive with butterflies. Finally after all these years i am going to get to walk around Pompeii. We get to the ticket booth and say we want to tickets. They say the infamous words. " Sorry, we closed 15 minutes ago." What??? So now both things that we wanted to see closed right before we got there. Could our luck be any worse?

Now its 615pm and we decided to just head home. A whole day of driving to get denied the 2 things we came to see.

On the way home, in the vicinity of Naples we see this plume of black smoke. What they heck? As we drive closer we wonder why they haven't shut the road down, because it doesn't look safe. We pass it but cant see flames, and also noticed that is was contained to a very small area. We figure someone had probably broken a gas line or something.

About 2 hours after that. We see more smoke. What is going on? Now we see police telling people to slow down. This seems to be a big fire. It turns out to be a grass fire, and it had come all the way up to the side of the road. We got there just as it was starting to burn out. I did however get a pic of the flames.

We ended up getting home around 1030pm. Although along the way we saw many ambulanced and cops. It seems that also around Naples, there was a car crash. They had blocked the road and people we stopped for miles. This idiot decided that he shouldn't be inconvenienced and decided to drive up the shoulder and try to go around the accident, only to hit one of the cars in the accident. Thus becoming the 3rd car. The main accident occurred around 6 i believe and cars were still backed up for miles around 8 when we drove by...

Anyway. When we get back home, we decided since its only 1030 and then internet place closes at 11, maybe we could get in some email time. Nope. The place was closed for some reason.

We came back here this morning to find out that customs had come, taken over the place, and checked all the computers for terroristic activity. YIKES! Thank heavens we weren't here.

It also seems that a huge storm had blown thru Perugia when we were gone. What a weird day.

Today we went to the cemetery and took some pics with our digital camera and i took some with black and white fill which is being developed now. I will have them on a CD Tuesday and will put them online. Until then, CLICK HERE for pics. When you get to that page, click the VIEW ALBUM AS GUEST button to the right of it.
